The San Diego Center for Systems Biology (SDCSB) aims to foster Systems Biology by bringing together scientist across disciplines and institutions to promote collaborative research and training, and the exchange of ideas and resources around Systems Biology. A central goal of the Center is to promote the advancement of Systems Biology via Educational Outreach. The SDCSB Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship is designed to introduce motivated undergraduate students who plan to major in math, physics, bioengineering, or computer science to cutting-edge biological research. This Program aims to bridge the gap from attending a community college to actively participating in a working research laboratory at the University level, while fostering a broader knowledge of Systems Biology. Ultimately, this Program will provide students with an increased confidence in their abilities to work in a research setting and raise their awareness of Systems Biology and the opportunities available in the emerging field.

Students selected to participate in the Program will be awarded a $3,500 stipend. Students will be placed in a SDCSB affiliated laboratory and be assigned to a senior member of the lab to act as a mentor during the ten-week program from June 15 – August 30. At the conclusion of the Program, students will be required to present a PowerPoint presentation and formal manuscript style report on the research they were involved in during the course of the summer.

As a Fellow in the Program, students will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn, develop, and enhance technical skills and methods in the lab through direct mentorship
  • Participate in all SDCSB activities including weekly discussions/meetings with participants from the Mesa (pre and postdoctoral researchers from UCSD, LIAI, SBMRI, TSRI, Salk)
  • Attend hands-on workshops on industry products and other scientific resources
  • Meet and discuss the current literature via journal club meetings
  • Free attendance to SDCSB hosted symposiums and seminars.

Successful fellows will be well positioned at the conclusion of the Program to stay with their hosts labs or to venture out to different research laboratories dependent upon need and funding.

How to Apply

Send an email to :

  • One page personal statement
  • One page discussion on a scientific topic you find interesting
  • One letter of recommendation from a teacher or advisor
  • The transcript>

Deadline: May 31, 2014 at midnight pacific time.

Eligibility

Applications are invited from undergraduate students who are currently attending a junior/community college and plan to attend UCSD or SDSU in the Fall ’14 and have a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Prospective Physics, Engineering, Bioengineering, Computer Science or students with interest in the biological sciences are particularly encouraged to apply. Applicants should be interested in research and be inclined toward graduate education in systems biology, in a PhD program or in an MD/PhD program.

The Award

The award is based on the application materials, including the personal statement, research summary, academic history, and the letter of recommendation. The benefits of the award include:

  • Full access to the benefits associated with the SDCSB
  • A cutting-edge research project in one of over 19 laboratories
  • Networking opportunities with current students and faculty members
  • A $3,500 stipend
